Taiwan Jade, the heart bits from the deep mountains (Documentary)
While searching for archive materials for the purpose of digitization, the little known fact that Taiwanese jade produced in Fongtian, Hualien was once well-known worldwide during the 50s and 60s was revealed. Ever since, Hualien has been the number one jade production center in the world and still retains that record. Unfortunately, after less than ten years of its glorious history, Taiwanese jade has passed into oblivion and some don’t even know its Taiwanese origins. This documentary film was made to recall the prosperous past of Taiwanese jade. Hok-Shin Liu, professor of the Department of Resources Engineering of National Cheng Kung University who started the fervor of jade quarrying about four decades ago, has agreed to accept our invitation for an interview for the first time and reveal the pinnacle moment of Taiwanese jade in history. Mr. Jin-yuan Jiang from a Taiwanese jade boutique in Hualien and Mr. Qing-hai Zheng from a jewelry store in Sanchong also put aside their work and assisted us in reconstructing the prosperity of the past. Taiwanese jade has left an exciting legacy in history. By watching this film, people will better understand the important role and meaning Taiwanese jade plays on this island.
