An uncluttered and serene place,
Seeming like the rigid job of librarians,
Though simple persistence,
Recording the vestiges of private memories.
Since 1945, NTU Archive has been recording the academic development and the effort of NTU members. In August 2007, NTU Archive Room was established after moving to NTU’s Shuei-yuan Campus. Since then, it has turned the once purely official documents into historical memorabilia. NTU Archive has stepped out from the storage and combined with digital information technology and professional workmanship to acquire multiple new faces with enriched content.
Many visitors have been drawn to the Archive Room since it first opened to the public for a special exhibition commemorating NTU’s 80th anniversary. The creative idea of combining administrational operation with art and humanity enhanced the educational function of the Archive and it is praised as a benchmark from all around the nation, signifying recognition of the archive preservation efforts of NTU.
NTU Archive Room is arranged according to chronological order and special themes. The display topics of the Archive Room include:
1. The Birth of a University and the Laying of Foundation
The Taihoku Imperial University was formally established in March 17, 1928 (3rd Year of Showa). The teaching, research, facilities, books, devices and equipment of the Taihoku period laid a solid foundation for future development of NTU.
2. Inherited from the Past and Create the Future
The Ministry of Education Commissioner, Mr. Tsung-lo Lo received the school from the president of Taihoku Imperial University, Kazuo Ando, in November 15, 1945. Mr. Lo became the first Principal of National Taiwan University. From The process of renaming Taihoku Imperial University as National Taiwan University can be seen from the transfer and receiving documents of the University.
3. Eventful Years – Social Interaction
From the movement of the enthusiastic youth, the April 6 Incident in 1949, to the request for university reforms in 1980, students have always been playing an important role in the University and they were also the group leading social interaction.
4. Archival Work and Old Memories
Appearing simple, the work on the Archive is routine and administrative. It is this easily neglected work which preserved the precious historical facts and assets for NTU or even for all Taiwanese.
5. Archives, Stamps and Art
Along with long history, NTU possesses an enormous number of used stamps, metal stamps, etc, in the same formats and styles, but presenting a visual metal and stone art collection.
