NTU Insect Museum


NTU Insect Museum, Department of Entomology, NTU is established in 1936 and it has now become a historical treasure with important components from Taiwan. The collection includes some historical specimens which are over 100 years old, as well as many rare species. The beginning of specimen collection can date back to the early eighteen century. The specimens are continiously collected since the period of Japanese occupation and post-war, but also, after 1980, the National Science Council encouraged staffs and students of department of Entomology for field survey of insects. After the encouragement, number of specimens had surged. These collections, among the finest and most comprehensive in Taiwan, and used for both research and education, supported specimen exhibitions and insect study camps, planned to cultivate young entomologists. Nowadays, the historical treasure of NTU NTU Insect Museum has now been leading to a look into the future progress in the field of Entomology from Taiwan.

According to the use the collection can be classified into four categories: type specimen, research specimen, teaching specimen, and display specimen. The NTU Insect Museum currently includes: 1. Specimen collection: over 330,000 individual specimens are contained in the collection, with the major orders including the Hemiptera, Orthoptera, Dermaptera, Isoptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, Neuroptera, Diptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, and Mecoptera. 2. Special exhibitions: we hope to popularize research into entomology for basic science education and to cultivate young pioneers with a passion for nature observation and environmental protection. Exhibition topics include Chronicle of the entomology building, Discovery of the broad-tailed swallowtail butterfly, Insects with a conservation status, Insect customs and cultures, Basics of preserving specimens, Insect ecology, Specialty subjects of our faculty, Basics of collecting insects, Interactive multimedia presentations, and Insects of the world. In order to make the collection more accessible to the general public, the NTU Insect Museum is now open to visitors. Innumerable precious specimens in the insect collection are splendid and have important functions in education and research.
